We have a lovely new release from one of Italy’s great wine producers, the 2021 Gaja Barbaresco. Rated at an excellent 97 points by Audrey Frick, who calls it “A luxury racecar, it’s fantastic and possibly the wine of the year”, this is classic Gaja from a superb Barbaresco vintage.
Gaja is a benchmark for Italian fine wine. The calling card of this iconic house, the Gaja Barbareso is produced from numerous vineyards in and around the village of Barbaresco. The average vine age is 40 years, which means complexity and concentration and each plot is vilified separately before blending to ensure that each parcel performs at its best. In a top year, like 2021, the results can be incredible.
Frick said of 2021 overall, “These are powerfully structured wines with a good deal of ripeness and tension. 2021 is closer in character to 2019 in that the wines are coiled, firmly structured, and have a lot of ripeness and acidity built for the long haul. These will be cellar-worthy additions to cellars”. Gaja’s is one of the best.
Details are below. Do take a look and let us know if you would like to secure a case or two.
A brightly jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Barbaresco is super-expressive, with loads of wild raspberries that leap from the glass along with notes of strawberries, pressed roses, fresh orange, and violet. As it opens, it evens picks up some spice box, cigar incense, and cherry notes. Crystalline in nature and ripe, this next-level red delivers ripe, sweet tannins, great tension, and fresh, vibrant acidity, without any austerity. A luxury racecar, it’s fantastic and possibly the wine of the year. Drink 2025-2055. (2024) www.jebdunnuck.com Drink 2025-2055
