New additions: A trio of top Californian producers

We are delighted to present a quartet of recent arrivals in our cellar from a trio of top Californian producers. All from the 2021 vintage, these Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from Mayacamas, Cerita and Kutch are phenomenal in quality and very fairly priced, the perfect combination.

Mayacamas is one of Napa’s historic wineries. In recent years, it has undergone a huge upswing in quality while prices are yet to catch up. The 2021 Chardonnay is a prime example, as with a 95-point score from Antonio Galloni and a great note, it is terrific value.

Ceritas is a new cult winery. It was begun in 2005 by John Raytek. He has no investors or partners, so enjoys complete freedom to produce exactly the kind of wines he wants. Those wines “express a pure, focused style that will appeal to those who seek tension and precision” (Dunnuck). The 2021s are some of the best ever made here.

Kutch is also a relatively new operation. It was founded in 2005 by Jamie Kutch and, thanks to meticulous winemaking and a focus on cool climate vineyards, has attracted a loyal following and rave reviews. The 2021 McDougall Pinot Noir is a stellar wine that provides superb bang for buck.

2021 Mayacamas, Chardonnay
10cs (6*75cl OC) @ £275 per case in bond
95 points Antonio Galloni
The 2021 Chardonnay is a rich, phenolic wine that shows just how distinctive this site is. Rich and layered, with striking intensity, the 2021 is lights out today. Lemon oil, almond, dried flowers and earthy undertones open beautifully with aeration. (2022) www.vinous.com Drink 2021-2031

2021 Ceritas, Zephyr Chardonnay
5cs (6*75cl OC) @ £350 per case in bond
96 points Audrey Frick (for Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2021 Chardonnay Zephyr pours a vibrant straw with green highlights and opens in the glass to notes of lime blossom, chive, and hints of tropical fruit and sea spray. It retains ripeness throughout, with fresh lime, green apple, white flowers, and fresh herbs, as well as saline and sea spray. Drink this over the next decade. (2023) www.jebdunnuck.com

2021 Ceritas, Elliott Vineyard Pinot Noir
5cs (6*75cl OC) @ £405 per case in bond
99 points Audrey Frick (for Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2021 Pinot Noir Elliott is packed with layered aromas of gravelly mineral earth, framboise, and wild herbs. Profound and balanced, with outstanding structure and gripping ripe tannins, it reveals notes of crunchy cherry, fresh earth, and a refined, elegant perfume on the finish. It continuously evolves in the glass and is an absolutely stunning and singular wine. Drink 2025-2045. (2023) www.jebdunnuck.com Drink 2025-2045

2021 Kutch McDougall Ranch Pinot Noir
6cs (12*75cl OC) @ £495 per case in bond
94 points Antonio Galloni
The 2021 Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch is a dark, brooding wine. Black cherry, spice, dried herbs, leather and tobacco add gravitas to this somber, imposing Pinot Noir. There’s serious depth and textural intensity here. (2023) www.vinous.com Drink 2024-2035
