Just arrived in Singapore - the outstanding 2020 Barolos from Sandrone

Our latest shipment from the iconic winery Luciano Sandrone has recently arrived in our cellars and we are beyond thrilled to launch the exquisite 2020 Barolo vintage.

2020 was a generally warm vintage in the vineyards of Piemonte, although without extremes of heat.  Temperatures did not hit the heights of many of our more solar vintages of late.  A significant rainstorm in early October created challenges around harvest time.  Growers had to select their picking dates with care and sort their fruit carefully.  Those who did so with skill produced elegant and expressive wines that are hugely seductive and which possess pin-point balance.

Grace, elegance and understatement are some of the qualities readers will find in the 2020 Barolo…the best 2020 Barolos offer exquisite balance, tons of class and plenty of up-front appeal.
– Antonio Galloni / Vinous

One of the key messages about the 2020 vintage is that, whilst very serious wines that are very opposite of simple were produced, it is not a year that demands extended cellaring.  The 2020s are forward, charming and appealing wines.  Sure, there are plenty that will improve over 15+ years, but they will also deliver masses of early pleasure and opening them young is no crime!

At the same time as launching Barolo Le Vigne and Aleste (the latter only available in extremely limited quantities this year) we are pleased to offer a gorgeous 2022 Barbera.  This is perfect for current drinking and will add significant class to simple Italian meals over the holiday season.

With all best wishes,
Matthew Hemming MW

Reserved on the nose but the palate shows huge class, fluidity and nuance.  Very expressive red fruit and spice.  Floral and perfumed with very fine tannins that frame and sit around the edges of the fruit.  Wild raspberries on the mid-palate.  Aerial and elegant but delivering great thrust and mineral tension through the line.
95/100 – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2020 Barolo Le Vigne is graced with brilliant aromatic intensity and plenty of depth. Crushed rose petal, mint, blood orange, spice, lavender and pomegranate all meld together. Le Vigne has a bit more aromatic vibrancy and verve than the Aleste, but shares a general feeling of openness with its sibling.
94/100 – Antonio Galloni

The compelling Sandrone 2020 Le Vigne opens with delicate but alluring scents of violet, rose, wild berry and aromatic herb. Reflecting the nose, the savory, elegant palate delivers juicy Morello cherry, strawberry compote, star anise and cake spice alongside a backbone of taut, velvety tannins.
96/100 – Kerin O’Keefe

2020 Barolo Aleste
SGD $960 ($1,046.40 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OWC)
** maximum 1 case per customer **

SGD $350 ($381.50 inc GST) per magnum (1*150cl OWC) – very limited stock

As usual, a more authoritative and muscular expression – classical Cannubi style with tannic heft and drive.  Chalky and savoury, with a darker-toned fruit profile than Le Vigne.  Mint, pepper, sage and spice.  There’s huge volume and power, with a richness that’s really well controlled within the wider fabric of the wine.
97/100 – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2020 Barolo Aleste is a classy, elegant wine that will drink well right out of the gate. Black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and dark spice resonate beautifully. Soft and succulent, with silky tannins, the 2020 Aleste is a total charmer.
95/100 – Antonio Galloni

Enticing scents of woodland berry, camphor and exotic brown spice mingle with a whiff of dog rose on the lovely 2020 Aleste from Sandrone. Structured and loaded with finesse, the savory palate features ripe red cherry, blood orange, star anise and a mineral note recalling rusty nail. It’s firm but elegant, with fine-grained tannins while fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced.

2022 Barbera
SGD $300 ($327 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)

Full, marked and sweet toasty oak dominates the aroma.  Behind the wood there’s a bight and vibrant structure of acidity and crunchy tannin.  Needs a few months for the oak to recede and find balance.  The plump blackcherry fruit finally comes to the fore on the finish, drawing to a close with juicy, succulent acids and a chalky grip.
90/100 – Matthew Hemming MW

Blueberry, raspberry and oak-driven spice aromas come to the forefront on the deeply colored, fragrant 2022 Barbera d’Alba from Sandrone. The aromas march over to the generous, savory palate along with ripe plum and ground pepper supported by tightly knit, velvety tannins and surprisingly fresh acidity for the dry, scorching year. Drink 2025–2032.
