Chateau Cheval Blanc: Class In A Glass

St Emilion’s Chateau Cheval Blanc is one of Bordeaux’s most important fine wine producers. Elegant, finessed and very classy, Cheval Blanc is rightly revered and deserves its place at the region’s top table.

Cheval Blanc has a long history with iconic wines made here for centuries. It was acauired by the LVMH group in 1998 and some serious inward investment only increased the already high quality. In recent years, the Grand Vin has been consistently outstanding, with Cheval Blanc making the most of a series of great vintages to produce a run of profound wines.

The Grand Vin is the reason behind Cheval Blanc’s immense reputation but the other wines made here are well worth checking out. Petit Cheval is the excellent second wine and is made in very small amounts, keeling it rare. Le Petit Cheval Blanc is the small production (around 8,000 bottles) white wine.

The Beauty Of Cabernet Franc Shines:

Located close to the border with Pomerol, Cheval Blanc has a unique terroir that allows it to grow a high proportion of Cabernet Franc grapes, along with Merlot and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The vineyards cover 39 hectares and are planted with 49% Cabernet Franc, 47% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil is composed of gravel, sand, clay and iron-rich subsoil. The average age of the vines is 45 years, with some over 100 years old.

What all this means is a wine that oozes class and quality. The aromatics are ethereal and complex (thanks to that high proportion of Cabernet Franc) while still subtle and elegant. The silky-smooth palate is pure, textured, precise and fans out beautifully.

Cheval Blanc On Film:

Such is the fame and reputation of this St Emilion, the prized bottle owned in the movie Sideways by the wine obesssive main protagonist is a 1961 Chateau Cheval Blanc.
