Sylvain Cathiard: A Boutique Vosne-Romanée Estate

Founded in the 1930s by André Cathiard, Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is a highly coveted micro-domaine based in the village of Vosne-Romanée. The estate’s global reputation was solidified during the 1990s under the meticulous direction of Sylvain Cathiard. Today, the property is capably led by his son, Sébastien Cathiard, who took full management of the cellar in 2011. Managing a compact footprint of approximately 5.5 hectares across Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Chambolle-Musigny, the estate adheres to a philosophy of thoughtful, non-certified organic viticulture. By limiting production and focusing intensely on vine health, the family ensures that each bottle remains a rare, highly sought-after expression of the Côte de Nuits.

Cathiard’s Silken and Structural Winemaking Style

The hallmark style of Domaine Sylvain Cathiard bridges intense primary fruit purity with a supple, seamlessly integrated tannin structure. Under Sébastien’s stewardship, the winemaking has evolved to favour a more restrained use of new French oak compared to previous decades, letting the underlying terroir take centre stage. Grapes are fully destemmed and undergo a gentle cold maceration to coax out vivid aromatics and rich colour without extracting harsh components. The resulting Pinot Noirs are celebrated for their velvety, multi-layered texture, vibrant energy, and a precise balance of density and lift that ensures the wines remain expressive at every stage of development.

Quality Across Elite Premier and Grand Crus

The exceptional quality associated with Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is driven by an enviable collection of old-vine parcels in Burgundy’s most prestigious climats. The pinnacle of the estate is a microscopic holding in the Grand Cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant, complemented by an elite quartet of Vosne-Romanée Premier Crus: Les Suchots, Les Reignots, En Orveaux, and the flagship Aux Malconsorts, which borders La Tâche. Rigorous green harvesting and strict sorting tables keep yields low, resulting in remarkable consistency even in challenging vintages. For collectors, these wines offer profound cellaring potential, steadily trading their youthful opulence for intricate notes of spice, underbrush, and refined mineral tension over time.

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 97

I recall tasting the 2005 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts from barrel with Sylvain back in 2007 and thinking something along the lines of "Wow." And despite being first in the line-up of many older vintages, this still ranks as one of Sylvain’s finest creations. It has a pure and precocious mint-tinged nose that is almost crystalline in its purity, deftly handling the new oak and retaining its youthful zeal. There is a sense of symmetry and precision on the palate – not a hair out of place. The fruit is slightly darker than its ’02 counterpart tasted alongside. The finish offers a gentle crescendo that risks leaving the imbiber stupefied. Give it a few more years, but this is one case where I empathize with infanticide. Drink 2017-2030+ Tasted June 2014. Vinous 94

Good saturated dark red. Pungent, mineral-driven aromas of raspberry, smoke, cocoa powder and spices. Silky on entry, then lush and seamless in the middle; a distinct step up in sweetness and depth from the foregoing samples. At once velvety and weightless in the manner of a top grand cru, offering superb lift, an impression of strong extract, and an ineffable floral quality. Wonderfully sappy, sweet and long on the aftertaste, with the fine-grained tannins concealed by a whiplash of fruit. I found this bottle remarkably sexy already, but it should be better a decade from now. [Stephen Tanzer, 03/01/2008]

JancisRobinson.com 18.5

Light nose, racy fruit. Very Vosne. Very sleek and sophisticated with lovely savoury race. Lots of sinew and sufficient flesh to distract from some very fine tannins. Great length and balance. Wonderful finish. [28/07/2007]

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026
