Krug: Monumental Champagne

Krug Champagne is a true connoisseur’s choice. Beautifully made, it effortlessly balances power and complexity with finesse, elegance and energy. The result is a series of Champagnes, headed by the famous Grande Cuvee, that are near peerless in their consistency and excellence.

Champagne expert sums up the quality and style well here. For him, “Krug is more than a Champagne. It is a word that stands for artistry, tradition, craftsmanship, and moments of pure pleasure… A chance to drink a Krug is never to be missed!”

The house was founded in 1843 by Johann-Joseph Krug and has used the same exacting methods for nearly two centuries. The wines are fermented cru by cru in oak barrels that give texture and complexity. Grapes are sourced from an impeccable network, and meticulous care is applied throughout. This ensures that everything about Krug screams quality and that opening a bottle is always a special event.

The Krug Champagne Cuvees:

Krug Grande Cuvee

The Grande Cuvee sets Krug apart from its peers. Rather than the flagship of the house being a vintage as with Dom Perignon or Cristal for example, Krug is a multi-vintage blend. It is usually based on a single year, but blended with dozens of wines across multiple vintages. This gives Krug Grand Cuvee incredible complexity and balance, even on release. It is this that makes it so popular among connoisseurs. In recent years, Krug has started to number its Krug Grande Cuvee as ‘Editions’ to make it simpler to identify individual bottles, their ages and component parts. It was a masterstroke and greatly enhanced this magnificent Champagne’s collectability even further.

Krug Vintage

This is Krug’s expression of a single Champagne vintage. Powerful and complete with massive ageing potential, it is relatively rare compared to the Grande Cuvee and tends to be in short supply, particularly when fully mature.

Krug Clos du Mesnil

Krug Clos du Mesnil comes from a tiny walled vineyard in one of Champagne’s best crus that measures just 1.84ha. 100% Chardonnay from a single vintage, it is elegant, poised and very pure.

Krug Clos d’Ambonnay

The counterpoint to Clos du Mesnil, this is 100% Pinot Noir. The site measures just 0.68ha, meaning that it is even rarer than Mesnil. Only 3,000 bottles or so are released, and they are always incredibly difficult to find.

Krug Collection

This is Krug Vintage that has been kept back in Krug’s cellar for further ageing. It is then released in microscopic amounts when deemed to be at a particularly interesting place in its development. Its limited nature means that it is always achingly rare on the market.
