Domaine du Pegau: A Châteauneuf-du-Pape Benchmark

Situated in the heart of the Southern Rhône, Domaine du Pegau is universally revered as one of the ultimate bastions of uncompromised, old-school winemaking in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. While the Féraud family has been farming land in the region since 1670, the estate in its modern form was formally established in 1987 by Paul Féraud and his daughter, Laurence Féraud. Laurence’s dynamic leadership, coupled with Paul’s deep ancestral knowledge, quickly propelled the domain from a respected local secret into an international cult sensation.

Today, Laurence brilliantly directs the estate, managing roughly 21 hectares of prime, old-vine parcels. By fiercely resisting the modern trend towards heavily extracted, highly polished wines, Pegau remains a definitive reference point for enthusiasts seeking the raw, majestic soul of traditional Châteauneuf.

A Style of Wild Perfume and Unapologetic Power

The defining hallmark of Domaine du Pegau is its robust, deeply complex, and intensely savoury style, which completely ignores modern cosmetic shortcuts. Sourced from a complex patchwork of soil types, including the iconic rock-strewn, galet-covered terraces of the La Crau plateau, the fruit naturally achieves magnificent phenolic maturity. In the cellar, the winemaking adheres to an uncompromisingly traditional protocol: the grapes undergo whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts in old, unlined concrete vats, with absolutely no destemming or temperature control.

The wine is subsequently aged for up to two years in ancient, neutral oak casks (foudres). This non-interventionalist regimen yields a wine characterised by a dark, brooding concentration, firm structural tannins, and a hauntingly wild aromatic profile of smoked meats, leather, garrigue, black olives, and kirsch.

The Legendary Cuvées Of Pegau

The world-class reputation and blue-chip quality associated with Domaine du Pegau are anchored by its flagship release, the Cuvée Réservée, an expertly woven blend dominated by old-vine Grenache, alongside Syrah, Mourvèdre, and small amounts of the other ten historically permitted regional varieties. In exceptional vintages, the estate crafts a series of legendary, highly allocated luxury cuvées, including the monumentally structured Cuvée Laurence (which receives extended cask ageing) and the mythical, ultra-rare Cuvée da Capo, sourced from ancient vines in La Crau. Through low yields and an uncompromising barrel selection process, the Féraud family delivers spectacular consistency across varying vintages. Celebrated for their jaw-dropping depth and magnificent symmetry, these investment-grade red wines require patient cellaring to shed their tightly coiled youth, eventually evolving into multi-layered masterpieces over several decades. Learn more about

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 98

Starting off the reds and easily the best example of this cuvee since the 2001, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence is incredible stuff. Deep, rich and layered, with copious notions of smoked meats, licorice, ground pepper, spice and saddle leather, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, terrific fruit intensity and a rich, mouth-coating texture. Hard to resist now, it should nevertheless have two decades of longevity. Drink now-2029.

This classic, benchmark estate for traditionally made wines is run by the talented, no-nonsense Laurence Feraud and her father Paul. While I struggle to think of a bad vintage here, 2010 certainly has to rank near the top of the heap and both the Cuvee Reservee and Cuvee da Capo are truly stunning, world-class efforts. 2011 is strong here as well, and should be consumed while you wait on the 2010s to come around. The 2012s are more in the style of the 2010s, with slightly more reserved aromatics, solid purity and beautifully fresh profiles. They too should be more accessible in their youth than the 2010s. A new development for this estate is the roughly 100+ new acres of Cotes du Rhone and Cotes du Rhone Villages that have been purchased just south of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, roughly 4 miles from the domaine. Formerly called Domaine de la Jouve, it lies just outside the town of Sorgues and borders the Rhone River on its western edge. Now called Chateau Pegau, the wines from here include a white Cotes du Rhone, the Cuvee Lone, a red Cotes du Rhone call Cuvee Maclure and a red Cotes du Rhone Villages called Cuvee Setier. Laurence’s negociant label is call Selection Laurence Feraud and consists of purchased grapes from throughout the Southern Rhone. They always show traditional characters and can represent solid values.

Vinous 94

Brilliant ruby. A wild, highly perfumed bouquet evokes candied dark berries, smoky minerals and licorice, with a sexy floral note emerging with air. Sappy, penetrating and sweet on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors that put on weight with air. Shows surprising vivacity for a hot-year wine and finishes spicy, focused and very long, leaving a note of spicecake behind. [Josh Raynolds, 04/01/2015]

Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030
