Chateau Beychevelle: An Overview of this top St Julien

Situated in the southern part of the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Beychevelle is one of the most popular wine estates in Bordeaux. Classified as a Fourth Growth in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the property’s name and unique identity stem from its colourful 16th-century history. The estate was owned by the First Duke of Épernon, a powerful Grand Admiral of France; as ships sailed past the estate on the adjacent Gironde Estuary, they were required to lower their sails as a sign of deep respect. This action, known in the old Gascon dialect as bêcha vêla (meaning “lower the sail”), gave rise to the name Beychevelle.

Adorned with its iconic label depicting a mythical ship with a griffin figurehead and lowered sails, Beychevelle possesses remarkable cellaring potential, purpose-built to evolve gracefully and reveal deep, multi-layered complexities over several decades.

A Style of Supple Opulence and Textural Harmony

The defining winemaking philosophy at Château Beychevelle favours elegance, silkiness, and structural balance, avoiding the aggressive, over-extracted, or heavily hard-tannic styles found in some corners of the Left Bank. The estate manages roughly 92 hectares of prime vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, situated on deep, gravelly terraces that reflect sunlight and ensure excellent natural drainage.

In 2016, the estate completed a complete, ultra-modern reconstruction of its cellars, utilising an architectural, glass-walled design that relies entirely on gravity-fed mechanics. The wines undergo precise vinification in custom, temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before ageing for up to 18 months in French oak barriques. The resulting Grand Vin is celebrated for its immediate harmony and seductive mid-palate texture, seamlessly matching dark plummy fruit and cassis notes with sweet spices, cedar wood, and fine, highly polished tannins.

Chateau Beychevelle’s Global Prestige

The outstanding global market demand surrounding Château Beychevelle is anchored by its spectacular consistency across varying vintages and a massive following among fine wine collectors worldwide, particularly in Asia. In addition to the Grand Vin, the estate produces a highly sought-after second wine, Amiral de Beychevelle, which offers a slightly more approachable but beautifully terroir-driven expression of the property’s gravelly soils. By enforcing strict manual sorting, rigorous green harvesting, and a selective optical-sorting process at harvest, the winemaking team guarantees a pristine, immaculate fruit profile.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 92

The 2012 Beychevelle has an attractive nose that displays a little more vim and vigor than the previous vintage: brambly black fruit, sous-bois and a touch of desiccated orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and acidity. A mixture of red and black fruit comingle with clove and thyme, gently building towards a slightly ferrous finish. Very fine. Tasted at the Beychevelle vertical at the property. [Neal Martin, 21/03/2023]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2040

JancisRobinson.com 16

Tasted blind. Hint of balsam and sage on the nose. Mouth-filling fruit but oddly soft. Lower tannin count than most 2012 St-Juliens. A bit simple. [10/02/2022]

Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034

Wine Advocate 92

The grand vin, the 2012 Beychevelle, is one of the stars of St.-Julien. Opaque purple, with beautiful creme de cassis notes, the wine has floral underpinnings, sweet tannin and a nice layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel. This is elegant and powerful, rich and intense, but light on its feet. This is a great Beychevelle and certainly seems to exceed the vintage’s character and expectations. Give it 4-6 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 25-30 years. [Robert M. Parker, Jr., 24/03/2015]

Anticipated maturity: 2019-2051

Vinous 88-91

(47% cabernet sauvignon, 44% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 4% cabernet franc; 67% selection for the grand vin; 42 h/h): Fully saturated deep purple-red. Aromas of black cherry, flowers and aromatic spices. Then surprisingly big and almost chunky for Beychevelle, with rich blackberry and black cherry flavors dominating. This crowd-pleaser finishes smooth, ripely tannic and long. [Ian D’Agata, 05/01/2013]
