Chateau Montrose – Monumental Bordeaux:

The St Estephe Second Growth Estate of Chateau Montrose is a phenomenal wine currently on a tremendous run of form.

This Bordeaux estate can trace its history back to the 18th century and was included in the 1855 Bordeaux classifications. Interestingly, the estate gets its name not from a person, but from the pink heather that once grew on this hill. The French words “mont rose” translating to “pink mountain”.

The Grand Vin is monumental, highly collectable and immensely age-worthy. For those looking for a window into the house style in a more easy-drinking and approachable style, the second wine, La Dame de Montrose, is a superb option. In the best vintages, it can rival many classed growths in quality.

Classically-Structured, Brooding & Age-Worthy:

Montrose is located in St Estephe, the most northern of the communes of the Medoc. The soils are deep gravel and sand with a subsoil of clay and marl. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend at around 65%, with Merlot around 25% and the balance Merlot.

Thanks to its terroir, Chateau Montrose is typically a brooding, muscular and imposing wine. Powerful and structured tannins and densely concentrated fruit mean that it can be impenetrable and closed when young. However, a decade or two of bottle age works wonders with Montrose. Time reveals a wine of classicism, complexity and nuance.

Like many estates in Bordeaux, serious inward investment in recent years has paid huge dividends. The estate is now crafting some of the most consistently excellent wines in its history. New vintages are often highly oversubscribed on release.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 96

The 2016 Montrose has an intense bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and touches of undergrowth, gaining delineation in the glass, a little more tertiary in style. The palate is very well balanced, with fine tannins, just a judicious touch of black pepper, gentle grip and a very persistent finish. Though it does not quite have the panache of others. Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year-On tasting. [Neal Martin, 21/04/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2030-2060

Tasted blind. Still some purple in the crimson. Sweet and lightly lifted with even a hint of camembert on the nose(!). By no means resolved! Rather harsh green tannins underneath. Not quite as concentrated as some but nicely balanced. A little bit of heat on the slightly dry end. (JR) [12/02/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2032-2048

vinum 94

Pure and ripe blackcurrant fruit. Very successfully fragrant Cabernet. Sweet and delicately subtle, despite the structural heft. [Matthew Hemming, 01/02/2026]

Antonio Galloni 98

The 2016 Montrose is every bit as impressive as it was from barrel, maybe more. Tightly wound and vertical, with remarkable intensity, the 2016 is simply magnificent. The tannins are there, but they are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. All the elements are impeccably balanced in a wine of pedigree, depth and character. The 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its best, but it is clearly a very special wine in the making. In a word: dazzling. [Antonio Galloni, 18/01/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2056

Wine Advocate 99

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Montrose is a little youthfully shy to begin, but with coaxing, it unfurls to reveal the most beguiling scents of wilted roses, oolong tea, crushed rocks, wild sage, star anise and candied violets over a wonderfully pristine, well-defined core of crushed blackcurrants, black raspberries and kirsch plus wafts of pencil lead and wood smoke. The taut, muscular, medium to full-bodied palate straddles jaw-dropping intensity and finesse superbly, featuring a solid backbone of ripe tannins and giving a firm frame right through the incredibly long, exquisitely nuanced finish. [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 30/11/2018]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2060
