Mugeret-Gibourg: A Vosne-Romanée Matriarchy

Based in the absolute heart of Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is widely considered one of the finest wine estates in the Côte de Nuits. The domain was established in 1933 by the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret, but its contemporary legendary status was anchored by their son, Dr. Georges Mugneret, an ophthalmologist who passionately expanded the estate’s grand cru vineyard footprint.

Following his tragic, untimely passing in 1988, the domain was bravely championed by his widow, Jacqueline, and their two daughters, Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée. Today, the sisters capably direct the estate alongside the third generation, maintaining a deeply artisanal, family-focused methodology across roughly 8 hectares of prime vineyard parcels that enjoy a profound, near-mythic global cult status among Burgundy purists.

A Style of Pure Silk, Floral Fragrance, and Unforced Balance

The defining winemaking philosophy at Mugneret-Gibourg prizes ethereal elegance, absolute fruit transparency, and a structural weightlessness that captures the quintessential, romantic soul of Pinot Noir. The sisters approach their cellar with a remarkably gentle, low-interventionist mindset, choosing a process of gentle infusion rather than heavy, forced physical extraction. The grapes are entirely destemmed to eliminate harsh, stemmy elements, followed by a cool maceration and a totally natural fermentation triggered by native yeasts.

The new oak program is masterfully restrained, rarely exceeding 50% for the Grand Crus and sitting at around 30% for the village appellations. This precise, patient approach yields a wine celebrated for its astonishing textural silk, showing an immediate aromatic lift of wild strawberries, rose petals, oriental spices, and a crystalline mineral spine that feels entirely effortless.

The Superb Quality of Mugneret-Gibourg Across the Crown Jewels of the Côte

The spectacular global market prestige and investment-grade allocations surrounding Mugneret-Gibourg are anchored by an elite, historical portfolio of single-vineyard plots. The undisputed crown jewels of the estate-owned vines are its legendary parcels inside Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, and the hyper-rare, texturally voluptuous Echézeaux Grand Cru. These grand landmarks are brilliantly supported by an exceptional tier of Premier Crus, most notably their classic Les Chaignots from Nuits-Saint-Georges and a benchmark, highly aromatic Vosne-Romanée Village bottling that collectors fiercely track down. By strictly limiting yields and rejecting modern stylistic shortcuts, the Mugneret family guarantees breathtaking consistency even in challenging, cool vintages. These tightly allocated masterpieces possess an incredible cellaring potential, purpose-built to slowly unfold magnificent, multi-layered layers of truffles, game, and damp earth over several decades.

Wine Advocate 93

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes is also showing beautifully, offering up pretty aromas of ripe cherries, red plums, warm spices, violets and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with a textural attack, almost melting tannins and lively underlying acids, concluding with a mouthwateringly mineral finish. [William Kelley, 17/12/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2050

Neal Martin 93

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes 1er Cru was green harvested this vintage as the vines had a lot of energy after being frosted the previous year. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a delineated and precise bouquet of blackberry, wild hedgerow and touches of tobacco. The palate is beautifully defined with filigreed tannin. Full of energy and tension, offering vibrant black cherries and raspberry preserve laced with crushed stone on the finish. Excellent. [Neal Martin, 10/01/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2040

JancisRobinson.com 17/20

Racy and lively with polish and ferny freshness. A more ethereal contrast to the Felletig wines. [07/01/2019]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2032
