Screaming Eagle: A Napa Valley Legend

Nestled in the prominent Oakville district of Napa Valley, Screaming Eagle is widely considered the ultimate blueprint of the American “cult wine” phenomenon. The estate was founded in 1986 by former estate agent Jean Phillips, who purchased a 57-acre plot planted mainly to a mix of varieties and initially sold the fruit to larger local producers. Recognising the extraordinary potential of her steep, rocky vineyard, she sought the advice of legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett, leading to the inaugural 1992 vintage release in 1995.

The wine instantly secured a flawless 100-point score from critic Robert Parker, catapulting the domain into global stardom overnight. In 2006, the property was acquired by billionaire businessman Stanley Kroenke, who oversaw a complete, state-of-the-art reconstruction of the winery and cellar, while strictly preserving the microscopic production levels that fuel its legendary scarcity.

The Ethereal Purity and Structural Polished Grace Of Screaming Eagle

The defining winemaking style of Screaming Eagle sets it apart from the dense, heavy, over-extracted profiles often associated with Napa Valley Cabernet. Under a succession of brilliant winemakers, including Heidi Barrett, Andy Erickson, Nick Gislason, and currently Robert Smith, the estate has consistently favoured precision, aromatic lift, and textural weightlessness.

The unique terroir, situated on a western-facing slope of the Vaca Range, features well-drained, gravelly loam soils that benefit from cooling breezes blowing off San Pablo Bay. This microclimate allows the fruit to achieve absolute phenolic maturity without sacrificing its vibrant natural acidity. In the cellar, the fruit is sorted with fastidious care and aged for up to two years in nearly 65% new French oak barriques. The resulting wine is celebrated for its seamless integration, matching an opulent, velvety mid-palate with highly polished tannins and striking notes of crème de cassis, violets, and crushed stones.

Unrivalled Investment-Grade Quality and Global Demand

The monumental reputation and blue-chip status surrounding Screaming Eagle are anchored by a relentless pursuit of perfection and arguably the most exclusive mailing list in the entire world of wine. The estate’s tiny production, which rarely exceeds 500 to 800 cases annually for the Grand Vin, ensures that demand permanently outstrips supply by a massive margin. Beyond the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, the domain crafts a secondary, equally revered red blend called “The Flight” (formerly Second Flight), which leads with a higher proportion of Merlot, and a hyper-rare, microscopic production Sauvignon Blanc that commands top-tier auction prices globally. By maintaining incredibly low yields and enforcing a ruthless selection process where any underperforming barrel is immediately declassified and sold off, the estate guarantees breathtaking consistency across varying vintages. Antonio Galloni 100

The 2019 Screaming Eagle is a wine of mind-blowing elegance and finesse that stand apart from the generally more potent style of so many wines in this vintage. Deep, sensual and beautifully layered, the 2019 is simply magnificent from the very first taste. A whole range of red/purplish fruit, spice, leather, dried herb and blood orange accents give the 2019 its vivid, wonderfully detailed personality. Because of its price, both on release and in the secondary market, Screaming Eagle is the most talked about wine in Napa Valley. It is hype or not? All I can say is that I was very fortunate to drink a number of older vintages during lockdown and all those wines lived up to their reputations. [Antonio Galloni, 07/01/2022]
