Domaine Jean Grivot: A Vosne-Romanée Institution

Operating from the heart of Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Jean Grivot is one of the great historic family estates of the Côte de Nuits. The Grivot family’s viticultural roots in the region date back to the 18th century, with the modern iteration of the domain shaped significantly by Jean Grivot and later his son, Étienne Grivot, who took over in 1982.

Today, Étienne manages the property alongside his children, Mathilde and Hubert, representing the fifth generation to bottle estate wines. The domain spans approximately 15.5 hectares of impeccably situated vines, farmed under a strict regime of lutte raisonnée that has evolved into entirely organic practices. By prioritising deep root growth and avoiding chemical interventions, the family ensures that their pristine old-vine material captures the absolute essence of each individual plot.

A Pure, Structured, and Patient Winemaking Style

The overarching style of Domaine Jean Grivot Pinot Noirs is characterised by their structural integrity, density of fruit, and exceptional clarity. Under the multi-generational direction of Étienne and Mathilde, the estate avoids modern winemaking shortcuts, favouring a patient, non-interventionalist approach in the cellar. The grapes are entirely destemmed and undergo a gentle cold maceration followed by fermentation with native yeasts. The wines are aged for up to 18 months in French oak barrels, with the use of new oak strictly moderated—typically capped at 25% for village wines and up to 60% for the grand crus. The resulting wines are not crafted for early appeal; instead, they display a taut, tightly coiled youthfulness that slowly gives way to a seamless, velvety texture and deep aromatic purity.

Sovereign Quality and Elite Cru Holdings

The global prestige and consistency associated with Domaine Jean Grivot are anchored by an extraordinary collection of old-vine climats across Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Chambolle-Musigny. The pinnacle of the portfolio features significant holdings in two iconic Grand Crus: Richebourg and Échezeaux (specifically within the prime Cruots sub-climat). This foundation is supported by an elite tier of premier crus, including the robust Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Pruliers and the highly sought-after Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts. Through rigorous green harvesting and meticulous sorting, the Grivot family achieves brilliant quality even in challenging vintages. These highly allocated Burgundies possess incredible symmetry and cellaring potential, built to reward decades of patient ageing with complex layers of exotic spice, dark fruit, and mineral tension. Learn more about Domaine Jean Grivot

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 90-92

The 2024 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots 1er Cru has darker fruit than Grivot’s other cuvees from this appellation, a little savoury in style, earthy, used tea leaves, bay leaf and bouquet garni infusing the fruit. The palate is fresh and almost citric on the entry, as if there was a drop of lemon zest in amongst the red fruit. Quite sharp though refreshing, this is not a deep or sensual Aux Boudots but balanced. Though short on the finish, it should drink well for ten or twelve years. [Neal Martin, 01/01/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2027-2039
