Chateau Cos d’Estournel – A Unique Property Overlooking Lafite

Situated on the border of Pauillac, up the hill from Lafite Rothschild and overlooking its famous vineyards, the St Estephe Second Growth estate of Chateau Cos d’Estournel is a spectacular property that crafts superb fine wines from an equally spectacular location.

There are many impressive and beautiful chateaux in the Medoc, Cos d’Estournel’s stands apart from the crowd.  |It was commissioned by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, a traveller and adventurer who inherited the estate in 1791. The influence of his travels and fascination with the East are clear, as the design is punctuated by elephants and pagoda turrets. It is unique and quite magnificent.

The Grand Vin and the second wine is Les Pagodes de Cos. The latter is made from specific plots within the estate. It provides a more accessible and fruit-forward window into the captivating house style.

Power, Complexity & Bold Flavours

The terroir here is excellent with gravels over clay. A huge amount of work has been done in to analyse the individual plots. This ensures that each is treated separately to ensure it performs at its best.  The blend of grapes is fairly classic Left Bank Bordeaux, with around 65% Cabernet Sauvignon in the Grand Vin, supplemented by Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc.

The style of Cos d’Estournel is reflective of its location on the border between St Estephe and Pauillac. It is full-bodied, rich, bold and intense, with aromas and flavours of black fruits, spices, leather, tobacco, and cedar.  It is also structured and powerful with firm tannins and remarkable ageing potential. With time in bottle, it becomes increasingly complexity and nuance. The quality is routinely excellent and the value very fair for a wine of this level.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 95-97

The 2025 Cos d’Estournel was picked between September 3 and 19 and matured in 50% new oak, the analytic alcohol at 13.25%. There is just a touch of CO2 on the nose that soon dissipates, gorgeous black plum and damson aromas, pencil lead and light iodine scents all delivered with impressive delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a hint of cracked black pepper and pencil lead that infuse the layered black fruit. There is a real crescendo of flavours in this Cos d’Estournel, fanning out gloriously towards the sustained finish. This is a serious Saint-Estephe that will age supremely well in bottle. [Neal Martin, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2032-2060

Antonio Galloni 96-99

The 2025 Cos d’Estournel is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Grand, dramatic and sweeping, with notable textural intensity, the 2025 hits all the right notes. Even in the very early going, the 2025 is magical. Dark red/purplish fruit, spice, new leather, tobacco, lavender and mocha build effortlessly in the glass. More than anything else, I am blown away by the wine’s magnificent balance. A masterpiece. [Antonio Galloni, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2035-2075

JancisRobinson.com 17.5
