Egly-Ouriet: A Champagne Superstar

Egly-Ouriet is an emerging superstar of Champagne. Although an historic Champagne house, in recent years, it has attained a cult following thanks to its combination of small production, immense quality and tremendous character. It’s a great alternative to the bigger names in the region, and this makes it a connoisseur’s choice that carries real cachet.

“This is one of Champagne’s finest producers, and everything here comes warmly recommended.” William Kelley

Meticulous Winemaking & Pinot Noir Mastery

The winemaking here is superb, and no producer is more meticulous. The Chardonnay is superb, but Egly Ouriet is the house when it comes to Pinot Noir. For Richard Juhlin, Egly is “Probably the foremost grower of Pinot Noir in the entire Champagne region nowadays”. What this means is the proverbial iron fist in the velvet glove.

The Egly-Ouriet Style: Power Without Weight

Critic William Kelley sums up the character nicely here in his review of the 2009 Millesime. For him, “This thrilling vintage Champagne exemplifies the intensity and power without the weight that Egly routinely achieves and testifies to his status as one of the region’s very best producers”.

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 94

Based on the 2014 vintage and disgorged in July 2020, the latest release of Egly’s NV Brut Rose Grand Cru is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of tangerine oil, crisp red berries, toasted almonds and white flowersa in other words, much as I described the 2013-base last year but with a touch more aromatic intensity. Full-bodied, vinous and enveloping, with superb depth at the core, racy acids and a pillowy mousse, it concludes with a long, penetrating finish. While it’s showing beautifully today, I’d love to revisit it with another year on cork. [William Kelley, 02/02/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2021-2035

Antonio Galloni 92

Egly-Ouriet’s NV Brut Rose is crisp, vibrant and lively in the glass. Finely sculpted red berry, chalk and floral notes give the Rose its cut and overall sense of energy. Medium in body, with terrific persistence, Egly-Ouriet’s Rose is all class. In this release, the Rose is especially taut in style, with a weightless sense of grace that is hard to capture in words. Disgorged: October, 2016 after spending 51 months on its lees. [Antonio Galloni, 12/01/2017]

Anticipated maturity: 2017-2022

Vinous 92

(60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay; 2 g/l dosage; disgorged in July, 2013 after 46 months on its lees): Light, bright orange. Pungent redcurrant and cherry on the perfumed nose, with a smoky mineral quality adding complexity and lift. Firm, sharply focused cherry and rose pastille flavors display excellent concentration and pick up a spicy element with air. Shows a hint of blood orange on the finish, which lingers with strong mineral-driven persistence. About 10% of this blend is still red wine from Ambonnay. [Josh Raynolds, 01/01/2014]
