The 2021 Sena is one of the superstar wines of the September releases and an absolute must-buy. From a superb vintage for Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, it shone in a vertical tasting earlier this year and is, for us, the best vintage ever made. We’re not alone in loving it, James Suckling has awarded this gem a perfect 100 points, while Luis Gutierrez gives it a highest-ever Wine Advocate score of 98+ points. We are thrilled to have an allocation to offer. 

Originally a project between Robert Mondavi of Napa and Eduardo Chadwick, Sena is one of Chile’s most important wines. From a spectacular and steep single vineyard with a breadth of complex soils and aspects, Sena is a complex and serious wine that ages magnificently. Combine this with a long, relatively cool growing season perfect for elegance, complex and nuanced Cabernet, and the result is a potential best ever.

We tasted this in a vertical that spanned nine vintages back to 1998, and while the consistent quality of Sena was astonishing, this shone. But don’t just take our word for it; the notes and scores from the critics show this to be a phenomenal young wine. For James Suckling, this is “An extremely pure and elegant vintage for Seña” and “Very discreet and subtle, with the elegance, freshness and poise you’d expect from 2021”. For Gutierrez, this is “One of the finest vintages of the iconic Seña wine” and has “great elegance and with length, purity and delineation”.

One of the finest vintages of the iconic Seña wine, the 2021 Seña comes from a cooler year, following the path of 2016 and 2018, certainly cooler than 2020 and 2019. It has a super expressive nose that is elegant, nuanced, perfumed, subtle and pure, with aromatic finesse, layered and complex. It was picked a couple of weeks later than in the previous two years and still keeping the alcohol below 14%. It was produced with a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Malbec (cooler years with more), 17% Carmenere and 6% Petit Verdot, fermented mostly in stainless steel and 10% in oak foudre. It’s fine-grained and structured but juicy, similar to 2018 but with more finesse. It has the spicy/herbal twist from the Cabernet, ultra-refined tannins that give it great elegance and with length, purity and delineation. Superb! 120,000 bottles produced.
