The 97 Point Pianrosso Brunello From Piccolomini

This single-vineyard Brunello from one of the region’s most historic wineries is superb in 2018 and, with 97 points, is James Suckling’s joint second-highest-scoring Brunello of the vintage. At just £265 per 6 in bond, it’s also an outright steal.

Ciacci Piccolomini is a winery with a long history and stellar holdings. The Pianrosso vineyard is the jewel in the crown of the estate, and the terroir here is exceptional, hence the decision to release it under its own label. In 2018, it is excellent and has a level of quality remarkable in a wine at this price point.

We were fortunate to taste this only last week and were seriously impressed. Complex and intense on the nose and beautifully balanced on the palate, this 2018 is a superbly elegant and finessed expression of the vintage. For Suckling, it’s “Full-bodied, full of depth and intensity, with firm yet seamless tannins”, while for Kerin O’keefe, (who gives it 98 points), it is “supremely elegant.. balanced and lifted”.

This is so complex, with lifting citrus and herb undertones to the blue and red berry fruit. Thyme, sage and lavender, with mocha and clove, too. Full-bodied, full of depth and intensity, with firm yet seamless tannins. Evolves to espresso. Balanced, powerful and very long. Try after 2025. (2022) www.jamessuckling.com

98 points Kerin O’Keefe
Camphor, forest floor, wild berry and dark spice aromas lead the way. Full-bodied and supremely elegant, the delicious palate delivers ripe Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and tobacco framed in tightly woven, velvety tannins. Bright acidity keeps it balanced and lifted (2022) www.kerinokeefe.com
