Two Way Traffic: Buying… And Selling Fine wine

If you have well-cared-for wines to sell, especially if originally purchased from Vinum, we would love to hear from you.

Recently at Vinum we bought a collection of Leroy from a local client in Singapore, a large cellar of Bordeaux purchased en primeur and transported under climate-controlled conditions to Hong Kong, cases of 2000 Lafite and Latour from a customer’s reserves at Octavian in the UK, and a collector’s stock of Krug 2000.  This week, I have two cellars to value and, just yesterday evening, an old friend called to ask if we might want to buy his 2005 Rousseau Chambertin.

We take great pride in selling the world’s greatest wines, with exceptional provenance, at Vinum.  To keep doing so and to grow our business, we need to be buying great wine at least as fast – if not faster – than we sell it!

This is where the two-way traffic comes in.

If we take such pains sourcing the best of the best for our customers, then what could be better than buying the same wines back when clients find they have more than they need?  We already have confidence in the provenance and history of the stock and, after all, Vinum is a wine merchant, not a wine shop.

Almost all of us start off with the intention of pulling the cork from each and every bottle we buy, but wine buying is an interest that spawns a hobby, that grows into a passion, that becomes a habit.  Almost all of us end up with more bottles than we could ever drink!  Next time you’re in the cellar trying to work out where to put the new OWCs that have just arrived, perhaps give Vinum a call…

We are always interested to hear from customers with wines to sell, but our main interests include:

  • Older vintages of Bordeaux, especially those that are mature and ready to drink.
  • Full cellars and ‘vertical’ collections of the same wine through multiple vintages.
  • Dujac, Coche-Dury, Rousseau and the like.
  • Vinum ‘agency’ brands that were originally purchased from us, for example:
    • Dujac
    • De Vogue
    • Petrus
    • Lafleur

Our primary concern when buying from private vendors is the condition in which the wines have been stored. Labels may become stained or bin-soiled over time, and we’re happy to consider bottles that may not win beauty contests, but they must have been kept in optimum conditions to preserve the wine inside.  We prefer to deal in full case quantities but also buy certain wines by the bottle.

If you have wines to offer us, please contact your account manager in the first instance, or contact the office by email at [email protected]. We will talk you through the process, provide a free valuation and perhaps arrange an inspection.  When wines need to be collected, we can do so in one of our refrigerated vans to ensure ideal conditions are maintained at all times.  Payment is made promptly, direct to your bank.

Whether you choose to engage Vinum as a broker or sell us your wine outright, our global sales reach means we are able to achieve the best prices and our low margin model means we maximise your return.  At all times we work with complete transparency and integrity, holding to the long-term, relationship-based principles which have always been at the heart of our company.
