Veuve Clicquot Extra Old - A Hidden Gem From the Veuve Portfolio

We are delighted to offer cases of one of the most interesting under-the-radar Champagnes in the portfolio of Veuve Clicquot, the Extra Old Serie 3. A blend of eight vintages: 1990, 1998, 1999, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014, this is much more than your standard non-vintage, and a Champagne of complexity and nuance with a spectacular capacity to age.

Veuve Clicquot has one of the largest collections of reserve wines in Champagne, which means it can craft expectational cuvees such as this. With eye-catching vintages included, such as 1996, 1999, 2008 and 2012, the quality level here is extremely high, and it has impressed the critics in the past. The Serie 3 is yet to be rated, but James Suckling recently sampled the Serie 2 and found it “Creamy and layered, with a medium body and soft bubbles. Delicious nut and pastry notes”. He awarded it an excellent 94 points.

Veuve Cliquot Extra Old is a Champagne that probably should be better known, but for the moment, it remains a hidden gem, an inside tip to be snapped up by those in the know.

Not yet tasted – Note for the Serie 2 below for reference:
I like the toasty complexity here, with quince, dried apples, lemon pie, brioche, honey, walnut and nougat. Creamy and layered, with a medium body and soft bubbles. Delicious nut and pastry notes. 50% pinot noir with 30% chardonnay and 20% meunier. Made only from reserve wines from 1990, 1998, 1999, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012. Dosage 3g/l. Disgorged on November 2018. This is the second edition. Delicious now. (2023) www.jamessuckling.com 94 points James Suckling
