Yamazaki 55 Year Old - 1 Bottle Available

The Yamazaki 55 Year Old is a piece of Japanese whisky history and we are delighted to be able to offer a bottle today at GBP 385,000 in bond.

Yamazaki 55 Year Old is a fascinating blend. The first distillation was in 1960 by Shinkiro Torii and then part-aged in Mizunara casks, while the second and third distillations were in 1961 and 1964 by Suntory’s second Master Blender Keizo Saji and were aged in American white oak casks. Chief blender Shinji Fukuyo, in collaboration with Shinjiro Torii’s grandson, then blended these component parts to create this masterpiece.

Fukuyo said, “While I often view other extra aged whiskies as art, I consider Yamazaki 55 to be more like a Buddhist statue: calm and mysterious, requiring time to truly enjoy inner beauty.”

This was initially released by Suntory in 2020 via a ballot and only 200 bottles were released from these precious casks. They tick the boxes for what is great about the very best Japanese whiskies – a beautiful dark and intense colour from the Mizunara oak and a strictly limited quantity. This is the oldest Japanese whisky ever released.

Colour – Deep amber distinctive of Mizunara casks.

Nose – A robust aroma redolent of sandal wood. A sweet, mature bouquet like well-ripened fruit.

Palate – A soft, smooth first sip that blossoms in the mouth with flavor. A mixture of sweet and slightly bitter, followed by a woody note from the Mizunara cask.

Finish – Slightly bitter, a fragrance like scented wood and a hint of smokiness. A sweet, rich, lingering finish.
