Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2015 launch tasting with Didier Mariotti:
Very exciting tasting with Didier walking us through tasting the Grande Dame 15 as well as the Grande Dame 2012, the Rose 2012 and the Clos Colin red wine that is used to make the Rose Grande Dame. The grande dame 2015 is 90% pinot noir now and Didier explained they have moved to more northern vineyards as they were searching for less maturity in the grapes and more “freshness and tension”. The 2015 is truly delicious and has a very long lasting, fresh finish. For Didier the 2015 is a “solar” vintage as there was no frost and lots of sun. The team works by blind tasting of about 700 wines in November and December to work on the yellow label blend and then they identify the wines with potential for additional ageing in March and April. These are re-tasted and then the decision of making grande dame is made. If there is a great Pinot noir vintage then you can make a Grande Dame vintage. The rose gets aged more so we are now getting the rose of the 2012 and the 2015 rose will be available in a few years.
