J L Chave: A Leading Light In Hermitage

Based in the village of Mauves, Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is the undisputed spiritual anchor of the Northern Rhône, boasting an unbroken line of family winemaking that dates back to 1481. This unparalleled historical legacy is currently guided by the multi-generational partnership of Gérard Chave and his son, Jean-Louis Chave, who took over primary direction of the estate in the early 1990s.

The Chaves are globally revered as the ultimate masters of the steep, granite slopes of the Hermitage hill. Managing roughly 15 hectares of exceptionally well-situated vines, the domain adheres to an uncompromisingly traditional, hands-on agricultural philosophy. By treating the vine rows with artisanal care and rejecting chemical shortcuts, the family ensures that their pristine old-vine material captures the absolute essence of this historic landscape.

The Art of Mastering the Blend

The defining winemaking philosophy at Domaine Jean-Louis Chave centres on a fierce defence of the historic blending tradition, yielding wines of monumental scale, structural harmony, and natural grace. While modern trends have pushed many producers to release single-plot cuvées, Jean-Louis Chave maintains that the true expression of Hermitage can only be achieved by orchestrating a symphony of different parcels. In the cellar, fruit from each distinct lieu-dit is vinified and aged separately in neutral oak casks (pièces and demi-muids), using native yeasts and minimal intervention. This allows the family to carefully observe the individual character of each lot before executing their masterful final blend, matching a dense, velvety mid-palate texture with a mineral drive and high natural acidity.

Sovereign Quality Across Iconic Lieux-Dits

The world-class quality and blue-chip status associated with Domaine Jean-Louis Chave are anchored by an elite portfolio of parcels spread across Hermitage’s most historic slopes. For their legendary red Hermitage, the family draws from a majestic collection of Syrah vines planted in prime locations such as Bessards, L’Ermite, Méal, and Peleat.

Their sought-after white Hermitage is crafted from ancient Marsanne and Roussanne vines in Chante-Alouette and Rocoules. In exceptional vintages, the estate also produces the mythical, ultra-rare Cuvée Cathelin. Through rigorous green harvesting and low yields, the Chaves deliver magnificent consistency across varying vintages. These highly allocated, investment-grade wines possess immense structural integrity, offering decades of cellaring potential as they evolve to reveal complex layers of smoked meats, black olives, iron, and crushed granite.

Served blind initially. Bright cherry red and extremely aromatic in an almost light strawberry idiom. But this was not served in a burgundy-loving household and it was clearly a northern Rhone Syrah. I was convinced it had to be a Cote Rotie, so delicate and refined was it. Pale, fresh and really appetising. Long and vibrant. I see from John Livingstone-Learmonth’s great book on the northern Rhone that Gerard Chave told him about Cuvee Cathelin (made for the first time in 1990 and only in the best years), I m not aiming at just more concentration; I m also after more finesse and a bit more of all its elements . Ingredients are the same as the main cuvee, just in different proportions. JLL described the 1991 as still solid in 2003 and suggested drinking it 2015-18, which we did, with great pleasure. We all agreed it was much lighter than stereotypical Hermitage. [14/01/2017]

Tasted at a oeThe Samplera icon tasting in London. I have tasted few vintages of the rare Cuvee Cathelin and this 1991 makes me rue the fact that I am not a millionaire! The 1991 just has a beautiful, melted bouquet with subtle gamey notes emerging: garrigues, white fennel, thyme and a hint of vanilla emanating from the oak. It is very focused and refined " much more captivating than I remember the 1990 many years ago. The palate is medium-bodied with hung meat, sage, white pepper and fennel on the entry. The tannins are a little chalky, but it is very well balanced and full of personality, generosity and refinement. This is just a beautiful Hermitage. Tasted December 2012. [Neal Martin, 01/12/2012]

I was blown away by Chave s 1991 Cuvee Cathelin. Still incredibly fresh, this vibrant, opulent wine revealed extraordinary precision and nuance in a full-bodied style. Dark cherries, cassis, earthiness, smoke and graphite all made an appearance in this breathtakingly pure, expressive wine. [Antonio Galloni, 08/01/2007]

Vinous 95+

Full ruby-red. Knockout aromas of cassis, roast coffee, bacon fat and minerals. Incredibly sweet in the mouth, but with brilliant clarity and delineation of flavor. Superripe yet shapely and light on its feet. Endless, fruit-driven aftertaste. Tannins and acids are covered by sheer material. An extraordinary achievement, even for this very good and somewhat underrated vintage. [Stephen Tanzer, 07/01/1999]
