Sylvain Cathiard: A Boutique Vosne-Romanée Estate

Founded in the 1930s by André Cathiard, Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is a highly coveted micro-domaine based in the village of Vosne-Romanée. The estate’s global reputation was solidified during the 1990s under the meticulous direction of Sylvain Cathiard. Today, the property is capably led by his son, Sébastien Cathiard, who took full management of the cellar in 2011. Managing a compact footprint of approximately 5.5 hectares across Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Chambolle-Musigny, the estate adheres to a philosophy of thoughtful, non-certified organic viticulture. By limiting production and focusing intensely on vine health, the family ensures that each bottle remains a rare, highly sought-after expression of the Côte de Nuits.

Cathiard’s Silken and Structural Winemaking Style

The hallmark style of Domaine Sylvain Cathiard bridges intense primary fruit purity with a supple, seamlessly integrated tannin structure. Under Sébastien’s stewardship, the winemaking has evolved to favour a more restrained use of new French oak compared to previous decades, letting the underlying terroir take centre stage. Grapes are fully destemmed and undergo a gentle cold maceration to coax out vivid aromatics and rich colour without extracting harsh components. The resulting Pinot Noirs are celebrated for their velvety, multi-layered texture, vibrant energy, and a precise balance of density and lift that ensures the wines remain expressive at every stage of development.

Quality Across Elite Premier and Grand Crus

The exceptional quality associated with Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is driven by an enviable collection of old-vine parcels in Burgundy’s most prestigious climats. The pinnacle of the estate is a microscopic holding in the Grand Cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant, complemented by an elite quartet of Vosne-Romanée Premier Crus: Les Suchots, Les Reignots, En Orveaux, and the flagship Aux Malconsorts, which borders La Tâche. Rigorous green harvesting and strict sorting tables keep yields low, resulting in remarkable consistency even in challenging vintages. For collectors, these wines offer profound cellaring potential, steadily trading their youthful opulence for intricate notes of spice, underbrush, and refined mineral tension over time.

Neal Martin 90

We opened a mouthwatering selection of red Burgundies, including two from one of my favorite producers in Vosne-Romanee. This would have been overseen by Sylvain Cathiard himself, predating the arrival of his son and current winemaker, Sebastien. The 1998 Vosne-Romanee Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a perfumed, heady bouquet of dark cherries, cassis and incense. The palate shows lovely balance and tastes sweet and candied, quite plush for a 1998 and not as elegant as the 2000. Though I admire the pastille-like finish, I feel there are some unresolved tannins, rendering it a bit stocky and unwieldly. [Neal Martin, 11/03/2022]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2030

I must confess that I was expecting to enjoy the 1998 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts more than I did. It has a fungal, potent undergrowth-scented bouquet with darker fruit than the 1996. It is medium-bodied and quite glossy with noticeable creamy new oak that is not quite as resolved with the fruit as I would have liked at this stage, with plenty of bottle age. It is also a little animally on the finish. Tasted June 2014. [Neal Martin, 01/08/2014]
