Based in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, Domaine Comtes Lafon is widely considered one of the definitive benchmarks for world-class white Burgundy. The modern era of this historic Meursault estate was shaped by the legendary Dominique Lafon, who took over in 1984 and famously reclaimed all of the family’s leased vineyards to bring production entirely in-house. He also pioneered the estate’s transition to organic farming in 1995 and full biodynamic viticulture by 1998. Today, the 16.3-hectare domain is capably led by the next generation, Léa and Pierre Lafon, who maintain this uncompromising commitment to soil health and biodiversity across an enviable collection of parcels in Meursault, Volnay, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Monthélie.
Comtes Lafon’s Style of Textural Opulence and High Tension
The winemaking philosophy at Domaine Comtes Lafon yields Chardonnays of remarkable complexity, celebrated for balancing a classic, dramatic mid-palate richness with a driving, mineral-edged acidity. Under the family’s guidance, the grapes are pressed slowly and fermented using native yeasts. A defining element of the estate’s cellar technique is its unusually cold, deep cellars, which slow down the malolactic fermentation and barrel ageing process. New French oak is used judiciously, rarely exceeding 30% for the top premier crus, and the wines are aged on their fine lees for up to two years without stirring (bâtonnage). This patient approach ensures that the natural opulence of the fruit is perfectly counterbalanced by vertical structure, intense site specificity, and a chiselled, saline finish.

The domain also produces exceptional, structurally refined Pinot Noirs from premier crus in Volnay, such as Clos des Chênes and Santenots-du-Milieu. Tasting Notes
Neal Martin 95
The 2011 Montrachet Grand Cru was a real surprise. Limpid in hue. This has a surprisingly rich, slightly honeyed (though certainly not pre-moxed) effervescent bouquet – white truffles, orange pith and pralines. There is real power, to the extent that you would imagine it comes from a far warmer summer. That is translated across onto the palate that has a slight viscosity. Quite decadent, bordering on extravagant, yet it channels all the power of this Grand Cru into a thoroughly enjoyable, multi-dimensional Montrachet that I am not 100% certain will actually yield more pleasure with further bottle age, as blasphemous as that sounds. Tasted at Maison de Colombier in Beaune.

Wine Advocate 93
Tasted blind, the 2011 Montrachet Grand Cru has opened up since I last tasted a bottle (also blind) offering glimpses of honeysuckle and beeswax, even a hint of dried pineapple with time. It feels fresh, effervescent even. The palate is underpinned by a fine thread of acidity, and this time I did not detect any oxidative notes towards the finish, although it did come across as quite "creamy" with accentuated oakiness that suggests it deserves 3-4 more years to reach its plateau. As before, I remain cautious with my assessment. Tasted October 2016.
Anticipated maturity: 2020-2038
Vinous 95+
Medium yellow. Oily aromas and flavors of lemon, iodine and vanillin oak, plus a whiff of butter. Large-scaled, glyceral-rich and powerful, but with uncanny smoothness to the thick, deep middle palate. Still a bit youthfully bound-up (duh!) but round and sweet from the outset. The wine’s strong acidity becomes apparent on the very long, fresh back end. Great potential here.
Antonio Galloni 93+
The 2011 Montrachet is an exotic beauty. White pepper, truffles, orange peel, creme brulee, almonds and mint are just some of the seemingly endless aromas and flavors that emerge from the glass. Even with all of its richness, the 2011 remains remarkably light on its feet. With time in the glass, the fruit becomes richer and more vivid, while the minerality also turns more prominent. This is going to be a fascinating Montrachet to follow.
