Château Angelus: The Pinnacle of St Emilion Elegance

One of Bordeaux’s most famous estates, Chateau Angelus is nestled in the heart of the Saint-Émilion appellation. With a legacy dating back to 1782, Angélus has consistently set the standard for exceptional Bordeaux wines. The estate combines tradition and innovation to become one of Bordeaux’s most consistent and recognisable names.

As well as the Grand Vin, Chateau Angelus produces an excellent second wine, Carillon d’Angelus, which comes from specific parcels of vines.

Chateau Angelus: A Family Jewel Across the Generations

Angélus is a family-owned estate with a rich heritage and a relentless pursuit of excellence in winemaking. The estate spans 42 hectares planted predominantly with Merlot (around 50%) and Cabernet Franc (around 47%) vines. The unique terroir includes vines planted on the famous St. Emilion limestone and clay soils that impart distinctive characteristics to the wines. The Boüard de Laforest has a history in Bordeaux that dates back to 1544 but it was their arrival in St. Emilion in 1910 and subsequent purchase of a parcel of vines known as the Clos L’Angelus in 1922 that signalled the beginning of the modern era of the Angélus estate.

The wines from Chateau Angélus usually require some patience before showing their at their best. Once mature Chateau Angelus is a wine that is suave and full of panache yet also pure, elegant and velvety in texture. These are wines at the very pinnacle of the St Emilion style.

Underperformance Turns into Greatness

After its heyday in the 1950s Angélus began to be considered as a perennial underperformer. This was up until 1989 when Hubert de Bouard joined the family estate. Having studied under the great Emile Peynaud at Bordeaux University, Hubert modernised winemaking practices and lowered yields. This ushered in a new era in which Angélus has become of the most revered names in all of Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

vinum 95

Heady aromatic fruit profile but the balance is there on the palate. The dense fruit is matched by freshness and some tannic bite. Bold and dark-toned in profile but still manages to hold freshness and sufficient lift. Has a liquorice note on the finish and, in the context of a denser style, pulls it all off with style. Peppery finish. [Matthew Hemming, 01/05/2022]

Tasted blind. Big, bold, very ripe. Sweet and charming with some floral notes. Really glossy and fun. Lifted and lively. Even though not the most concentrated. A little bit of heat on the end. [19/01/2022]

Anticipated maturity: 2028-2045

Antonio Galloni 97

The 2018 Angelus is striking. Cabernet Franc aromatics make a strong first impression. Vibrant and delineated, the 2018 is incredibly refined in every way. The move towards a bit less extraction really seems to let the purity of the fruit come through. The same is true of a reduction of oak. All the elements come together so effortlessly. The 2018 has all the richness readers expect of Angelus, with much more finesse and more overall vibrancy, a combination that works so well. [Antonio Galloni, 29/03/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2028-2043

Wine Advocate 97

The 2018 Angelus is blended of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, aged mainly in oak barriques, 100% new, plus two new foudres. Deep garnet-purple in color, it struts flamboyantly out of the glass with stylish scents of black raspberries, boysenberries and Black Forest cake, plus nuances of rose oil, forest floor, dusty soil and cinnamon toast with a hint of cedar chest. The medium to full-bodied palate is carrying a little new oak at this youthful stage, framing the generous red and black fruits along with ripe, plush grape-skin tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and spicy. Give it 5-6 years in cellar for everything to marry, then drink it over the next 20+ years. [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 24/03/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2046

Neal Martin 95

As I mentioned in my tasting note from barrel, the 2018 Angelus is the first vintage aged in two new foudres. It is very perfumed on the nose, one of the most floral that I can recall at this early stage. Violet and incense aromas percolate through the precise blackberry and cassis fruit, all displaying fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. This is a velvety-smooth Angelus that would drink young if there was not still some oak to be assimilated. Fine balance and focus on the finish, which seems to firm up with continued aeration. This is a charming and quite sophisticated Saint-Emilion that should give 20-30 years of drinking pleasure. [Neal Martin, 08/03/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2023-2048
