Tasting Notes

Vinous 97

The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is probably now just a step ahead of the Clos Saint-Denis on the nose: stunning violet-infused red fruit with veins of blueberry that unfold exquisitely. The palate is silky smooth in texture, lightly spiced with a cornucopia of mineral-driven red fruit that convey just the right degree of flamboyance. Outstanding. – Neal Martin [Vinous, 28/09/2020]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2050

Wine Advocate 96

Unfurling in the glass with aromas of sweet berry fruit, dark chocolate, rose petals, orange rind, burning embers and spices, the 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is full-bodied, layered and muscular, with a deep, concentrated and multidimensional core that’s framed by rich, powdery tannins and impressively lively acids. This is a dramatic wine that hasn’t yet shut down, but I wouldn’t plan on opening bottles for at least a dozen years. [William Kelley, 30/12/2020]

Anticipated maturity: 2030-2060

JancisRobinson.com 19

They have 1.95 ha here (4.8 acres). Five blocks from Mont Luisants across to Les Chabiots, average age 50 years. Barrel sample.
A light note of smoky reduction. Ripe and dark. Sweet and sour. Intense and not yet integrated. Some baking spice and a touch of chocolate. Hard to judge this at the moment bit it certainly has massive fruit depth and richness and yet also a chalky mineral finish that pulls it in at the end. Embryonic but I think it will be a great wine. vinum 94

Showing the rose hips and spice of a whole bunch style. Restrained and savoury red fruit with an attractively brambly edge. Has purity, cut and a mineral quality to the tannins. Crunchy and yet also sweet in the fruit. This dances. Perfumed and fragrant on the finish with more stem character supplying snap and crackle. [Matthew Hemming, 01/09/2022]
