Jacques-Frederic Mugnier: Icon Burgundy

JF Mugnier is one of Burgundy’s superstar domaines. Famed for its Musigny, but with a Bonnes Mares and Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses that are also sensational, this is red Burgundy of the very top tier.

The Famous Mugnier Musigny

Musigny is a benchmark vineyard. For Clive Coates, it’s “one of the very greatest climats in the whole of the Côte d’Or” and “can be quite simply the most delicious wine to be found in Burgundy… heaven in a glass.” Jasper Morris concurs, calling it “one of Burgundy’s outstanding Crown Jewels”, and he places it above even Chambertin on the qualitative tree. It has a mythical aura, as do the wines that come from here… none more so than that of Mugnier.

Mugnier’s Musigny is one of Grand Cru Burgundy’s ultimate trophies and, for Coates, “A wine at the summit of what Burgundy can produce”. Supply is minuscule, and since those with it are seldom inclined to let theirs go, it appears for sale fleetingly and only in tiny amounts.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 97

The 2018 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet, brambly red fruit, sous-bois, just faint touches of iodine. The oak is seamlessly integrated and there is deeply impressive delineation considering the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied and very cohesive, a discrete whole bunch character lending peppery notes that become quite prominent on the mid-palate. Saline and full of character, it melds together beautifully in the glass, the imprimatur of the growing season just molding the finish more than the terroir, yet there is always a spine of mineralite that keeps drawing you back. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. [Neal Martin, 22/11/2022]

Lots of powdered spice notes. A little tanky at first but there’s a distinct note of that. Plump and generous on the palate with red fruit but also some plummier tones. The spice is sustained. Alcohol is warm and makes its presence felt. There’s a succulence and sap to the fruit and also a ginger tone that starts on the nose and is carried through the line. Just a little too broad. Some vines planted in the 1940s and others 1958-1963. Barrel sample but already racked and back into barrel.
Deep crimson. Lifted with intense and pure cherry fruit and something almost a little minty/herbal even though it is fully ripe. At the moment the tannins are deeply layered, compact but not resistant. Majestic in its darker underlying power and restraint, with a dark, almost rocky finish that is dry and yet full of energy. Tannins are smooth but chalky because the grain is so fine. Endlessly long. (JH) [26/11/2019]
