Producer Profile

Etienne Guigal: Rhone Valley Pioneer

Guigal is a revered and influential wine producer based in the Northern Rhône. Established in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, the estate has grown to become one of the most prestigious and recognised names in the Rhône Valley. Today, Philippe Guigal is the third generation to continue in the family business. The winery is located in Ampuis. This village is in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie appellation and is known for its commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and character.

State-of-the-art Production

Guigal is especially known for its commitment to ageing wines in oak barrels, contributing to the complexity and structure of its wines. The cellars contain an impressive collection of old vintages, reflecting the estate’s dedication to producing age-worthy wines. Winemaking is generally low intervention to allow the character of each vineyard to shine through.

The Famous Guigal La La Single Vineyard Côte Rôties

Guigal owns and manages vineyards in some of the most prestigious appellations of the Northern Rhône. This includes Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. It is this ownership that allows them to produce some of the finest single vineyard Côte Rôtie wines from the lauded La Turque, La Mouline and La Landonne vineyards – collectively referred to as the La Las. These are wines that each express the individual terroir of the vineyards and have received consistently high scores over decades.

This remains an iconic producer that has played a crucial role in shaping the reputation of the Northern Rhône. With a rich history and exceptional vineyard holdings, Guigal is a reference point for those seeking the finest expressions of Rhône Valley terroir.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Vinous 95

The 2020 Condrieu La Doriane is magnificent. Showing terrific concentration and complexity alongside spot-on freshness, it unfurls with delicious apricot, orange blossom, vanilla, white peach, brioche and melon. The 2020 is an outstanding La Doriane with slightly more precision than the almost equally enticing 2019. [Nicolas Greinacher, 28/03/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2032

Wine Advocate 93

While the 2020 Condrieu la Doriane matured entirely in new oak, there’s just a hint of toast on the nose. The rest of the bouquet features a kaleidoscopic swirl of floral and spice notes with melon and white peach. Medium to full-bodied, it’s exquisitely expansive and silky in texture, yet it remains refreshing on the lengthy, mouthwatering finish. [Joe Czerwinski, 12/10/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2021-2027

JancisRobinson.com 16.5

100% Viognier. Aged nine months in 100% new oak.
Pure and refined with stone-fruit and toasty notes, the oak, though, well integrated. Reserved on the palate but fine, round and persistent. Slight glow of alcohol but plenty in reserve. (JL) [25/10/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2023-2030
