Chateau Haut Brion: The Connoisseur’s First Growth

The sole First Growth from Pessac, Chateau Haut Brion, is one of Bordeaux’s icon fine wines. Historic – in Jane Anson’s words, “Haut Brion is unquestionably the one with the greatest claim to being the actual First of the Firsts in terms of longevity and historical influence” – and brilliant in equal measure. It fully deserves its place at Bordeaux’s top table.

There’s a quiet confidence about Haut Brion. It has a remarkable habit of achieving perfect ratings from the critics. However, it always seems to be great value compared to fellow First Growths. Combine this with a gorgeous style, and it’s easy to see why Haut Brion is often considered a connoisseur’s choice.

The famous Grand Vin makes up about 40% of production. This is about the same as the second wine, Le Clarence de Haut Brion.

Chateau Haut Brion’s home in Pessac is famous for its white wines; Haut Brion Blanc is the benchmark, a wine against which all others are mentioned and a rival to the great white of Montrachet in terms of quality, exclusivity, collectability and indeed price.

A Wine of Stunning Beauty

Located on the outskirts of Bordeaux city itself, Haut Brion sits on a fantastic terroir. Varied soils are of limestone, sandy gravels and deep clays. The location close to Bordeaux gives a little extra warmth. This means earlier picking than most and a touch more Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend.

Haut Brion’s style is one of genuine beauty. The varied terroirs here combine to result in a wine that combines the elegance of Lafite with the aromatic complexity of Margaux. Again, to quote Jane Anson, it “is often the benchmark for what can be achieved in any given vintage in Bordeaux.

The Legendary Chateau Haut Brion 1989

Any list of the best wines made in Bordeaux, or anywhere else for that matter, must include Chateau Haut Brion 1989. The product of an excellent Bordeaux vintage, it was an immense wine from barrel and fully lived up to its potential. 1989 Haut Brion has amassed 100-point scores from nearly every critic that has tasted it.

As 1989 Haut Brion, it ages and matures, it continues to impress. Neal Martin awarded it a perfect score in 2019, and Jane Anson did the same in 2021. William Kelley followed suit in 2022.

vinum 88

Here the fruit is almost peachy. Has a bit more substance on the mid-palate. Punishing on the back end. Spicy finish. [Matthew Hemming, 01/01/2024]

Neal Martin 91

The 2020 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is quite flamboyant on the nose with black plum, boysenberry and sous-bois scents, just a touch of pitted black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy, with more weight and amplitude compared to the La Chapelle and with a lovely savory/Provencal herb tincture towards the finish. This is a lovely Deuxieme Vin. [Neal Martin, 08/02/2023]

Antonio Galloni 92

The 2020 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a jewel of a wine. Deep, powerful and structured, it captures all of the gravitas of the Grand Vin, but in a more accessible style. Gravel, leather, tobacco, cedar and dried herbs lend quite a bit of aromatic nuance to this powerhouse Pessac-Leognan. I very much like the intensity and drive here. [Antonio Galloni, 01/06/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2035

Wine Advocate 92

A blend of 60.1% Merlot, 31.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.7% Cabernet Franc and 1.5% Petit Verdot, harvested from the 7th to the 29th of September, the 2020 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion has an estimated alcohol of 15.2%. Deep purple-black in color, it bursts from the glass with notions of baked black cherries, blackberry pie and plum preserves, leading to hints of ripe redcurrants, spice cake and smoked meats, plus a touch of hoisin. The big, rich, full-bodied palate is a full-on decadent mouthful, featuring lovely freshness to lift all that rich black fruit and a velvety texture, finishing long and spicy. A beautiful behemoth that is going to wow the hedonists! [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 02/05/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2040

Full, distinctive, embossed bottle 1,305 g. Cask sample taken 12 April. 60.1% Merlot, 31.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.7% Cabernet Franc, 1.5% Petit Verdot. Estimated alcohol: 15.2%. Picked from 7 to 29 September Mid purplish crimson. Rather simple, or at least uncommunicative, on the nose at present, though there is a beguiling combination of ripe fruit and stoniness (warm bricks?) on the palate which has impressive concentration. Comparing it with other celebrated Pessac-Leognans of the same vintage, it is clear that this has some magic dust – as it should considering how much more expensive it is. Lots of leathery tannin underneath but it is the integrity of the fruit that is so impressive. [18/04/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2029-2048
