Chateau Figeac: A Resurgent St Emilion
Chateau Figeac’s recent promotion to St Emilion’s top classification, 1er Grand Cru Classe A, is emblematic of this historic property’s return to top form. After a few decades in the wilderness, Figeac has been resurgent in recent years and now rivals the very best.
A historic Chateau, owned by the Manoncorts, Figeac has seen huge inward investment and changes in vineyard practices and ever more care and skill in the winery. The result is one of Bordeaux’s most desirable wines.
The Grand Vin is superb, as is the second wine, Petit Figeac, which gives an excellent insight into the house style in a more open and approachable package.
Figeac’s Unique Terroir & Profile
Figeac is a fascinating St Emilion. While most properties in this appellation sit on deep limestone with a thin layer of clay, Figeac is different. Its location close to the river means that it has gravelly soils. These are better suited to Cabernet, so the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Cabernet Franc (35%) and Merlot (30%) is rare, if not unique, on the Right Bank.
This blend gives a wine of subtlety, class and finesse that wears its power and structure lightly. It is a Bordeaux with a unique profile, and this makes it a real prize for Bordeaux connoisseurs.
Chateau de Millery: The ‘Romanee-Conti’ of St Emilion
Also owned by the Manoncorts of Château Figeac, Château de Millery is worth having on the radar. A tiny 1ha jewel of a vineyard, it has been called “The Romanee-Conti of St Emilion” according to Jane Anson. For her, it is lush, exotic and opulent. However, with only 300 cases made each year, is nearly impossible to find. If you see a case, don’t hesitate.

Ripe and juicy berry fruit. Has some airiness and spice, with no barrel characters to dray it back down to earth.

The 2021 Figeac is a classy, supremely polished Saint-Emilion. Floral and savory notes meld into a core of dark cherry, leather, tobacco, spice, mocha and lavender. I imagine the 2021 will drink well with minimal cellaring. It’s an undeniably attractive wine with no hard edges, but also less textural depth than the best years. Managing Director Frederic Faye and his team reduced elevage by two months because of the lighter structure of the wine, a decision that paid off nicely.

The 2021 Figeac was bottled the previous mid-July after being stored in vat for two months to gain more on the mid-palate. It has a sensual bouquet with pure wild strawberry and raspberry fruit, pencil box and tobacco scents that emanate from the Cabernet component. This seems to be a bit closed on the day. The palate is medium-bodied with a hint of dark chocolate and leather on the entry and a fine sapidity throughout, gently fanning out toward its composed, menthol-tinged, refreshing finish.
