Henri Boillot: Burgundian Brilliance From A Master Craftsman

Based in Meursault, Henri Boillot is one of the Côte de Beaune’s most respected winemakers. Henri Boillot consolidated the family vineyards under a single label and established a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, and has an uncompromising focus on quality across a diverse portfolio that includes both estate-grown fruit and meticulously sourced négociant parcels from Burgundy’s finest terroirs.

Chiselled Precision in White Burgundy

The white wines of Henri Boillot are celebrated for their clarity, driving energy, and structural definition. While the domaine handles fruit from legendary Grand Cru sites like Bâtard-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne, its spiritual heart lies in Puligny-Montrachet. The crown jewel of the estate is the four-hectare monopole, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Clos de la Mouchère. To preserve the site-specific minerality and vibrant acidity of these Chardonnays, the winemaking utilises whole-cluster pressing, native yeasts, and an early harvest strategy. Ageing takes place predominantly in larger 350-litre oak barrels rather than standard barriques, a technique that reduces wood contact and prevents the fruit from becoming overshadowed by oak character.

The result is wines that are tensile, pure and stunningly put together. Taste a bottle with Henri Boillot on the label, and you are tasting some of the best that contemporary Burgundy has to offer.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Vinous 95

(domain wine): Sexy aromas of peach, orange oil and smoky silex. Concentrated, layered and utterly seamless, with peach and soft citrus fruit flavors lifted by powerful flinty minerality. A premier cru with grand cru perfume and inner-palate energy. This sharply delineated wine stains the palate and builds inexorably on the sappy aftertaste. Superb. (Incidentally, Boillot did not make a Chevalier-Montrachet in either 2009 or 2008.) [Stephen Tanzer, 09/01/2011]

Wine Advocate 94

The 2009 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Mouchere is hugely impressive. It bursts from the glass with layers of mineral-infused finish, showing tremendous energy and focus. Words can only fail in capturing the sheer beauty and completeness of the wine. The striking, pointed finish leaves a lasting impression. Anticipated maturity: 2015+.

Henri Boillot began harvesting on September 3rd, which he thought was critical in maintaining as much freshness as possible. All of the wines were aged in 350-liter light-toast Francois Freres barrels, with no batonnage. These are some of the most viscerally thrilling, textured 2009s readers will come across. Boillot’s ever-growing collection of negociant wines is reviewed separately. I tasted with Boillot at his Volnay facility, and was thus able to only taste a handful of 2010s, all Domaine (rather than Maison) wines. The 2010s I did taste were exciting and hugely promising.

Ye olde drama and struck match that I remember from olden days. Lots to get your teeth into here though a little more restrained on the finish than some earlier vintages. (I remember when – a much earlier vintage of – this was served on Concorde…) It should not prove a disappointment however. [14/01/2011]

Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021
