Henri Boillot: Burgundian Brilliance From A Master Craftsman

Based in Meursault, Henri Boillot is one of the Côte de Beaune’s most respected winemakers. Henri Boillot consolidated the family vineyards under a single label and established a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, and has an uncompromising focus on quality across a diverse portfolio that includes both estate-grown fruit and meticulously sourced négociant parcels from Burgundy’s finest terroirs.

Chiselled Precision in White Burgundy

The white wines of Henri Boillot are celebrated for their clarity, driving energy, and structural definition. While the domaine handles fruit from legendary Grand Cru sites like Bâtard-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne, its spiritual heart lies in Puligny-Montrachet. The crown jewel of the estate is the four-hectare monopole, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Clos de la Mouchère. To preserve the site-specific minerality and vibrant acidity of these Chardonnays, the winemaking utilises whole-cluster pressing, native yeasts, and an early harvest strategy. Ageing takes place predominantly in larger 350-litre oak barrels rather than standard barriques, a technique that reduces wood contact and prevents the fruit from becoming overshadowed by oak character.

The result is wines that are tensile, pure and stunningly put together. Taste a bottle with Henri Boillot on the label, and you are tasting some of the best that contemporary Burgundy has to offer.

Tasting Notes

Vinous 93+

Rather inexpressive on the nose, hinting at soft citrus fruits. Then powerfully minerally in the mouth in spite of a rather silky texture, with strong acidity contributing to the impression of energy. Still youthfully compact, and best today on the very dry, very long finish, where the wine’s superb density calls for extended aging. The acidity here, according to Boillot, is 5.85 grams per liter-certainly one of the higher numbers I heard in Burgundy this spring. (Incidentally, Boillot opened a bottle of the 2002 Clos de la Mouchere for me that was still a couple of years short of its peak. It did not show the surmaturite displayed by so many whites from this vintage. As we enjoyed this wine, Boillot commented that his top 2000s were too young to drink but that his 2001s were developing faster than he would have predicted at the outset. And he recommended drinking his 2005s before his 2002s "due to hydric stress" in 2005. [Stephen Tanzer, 09/01/2010]

Wine Advocate 91

This is well defined on the nose, granite, kiwi, Granny Smith with just a hint of white tipped asparagus. The palate is well balanced, great minerality and acidity, with a underlying biscuit element that comes through on the persistent finish. Excellent. Drink 2011-2018. Tasted January 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018
