Chateau Canon: Superstar St Emilion

The St Emilion of Chateau Canon has emerged in recent years not just as one of the appellation’s superstars, but as one of Bordeaux’s best wines.

Chateau Canon was resurgent under John Kolasa (ex Chateau Latour) after being bought by the Wertheimer family. They are the owners of the Chanel fashion house and Margaux’s Chateau Rauzan-Segla and invested heavily in the estate after recognising its potential. This has paid huge dividends as Chateau Canon is emblematic of all that is great about modern St Emilion.

The Grand Vin gains much attention. However, for those looking for a window into the house style and some absolutely world-class winemaking at a very affordable price, there is an option. The 2nd wine, Croix Canon is a an excellent buy and great value.

Chateau Canon: St Emilion at its Ethereal and Impeccable Best

The vineyard of Chateau Canon covers 34 hectares and is planted with 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. The soil is classic St Emilion and is composed of limestone, clay and sand, and provides good drainage and minerality. The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted carefully.

Kolasa’s hard work and that of his replacement, Nicolas Audebert is now producing huge dividends as Canon produces stunning wines. Jane Anson sums up the style nicely. For her, Canon has, “All the grace and power that the plateau of St Emilion can deliver, dealt out very slowly and precisely.”  There’s a purity of fruit here that’s just breathtaking. This has won the property an army of fans.
