Chateau Haut Brion: The Connoisseur’s First Growth
The sole First Growth from Pessac, Chateau Haut Brion, is one of Bordeaux’s icon fine wines. Historic – in Jane Anson’s words, “Haut Brion is unquestionably the one with the greatest claim to being the actual First of the Firsts in terms of longevity and historical influence” – and brilliant in equal measure. It fully deserves its place at Bordeaux’s top table.
There’s a quiet confidence about Haut Brion. It has a remarkable habit of achieving perfect ratings from the critics. However, it always seems to be great value compared to fellow First Growths. Combine this with a gorgeous style, and it’s easy to see why Haut Brion is often considered a connoisseur’s choice.
The famous Grand Vin makes up about 40% of production. This is about the same as the second wine, Le Clarence de Haut Brion.
Chateau Haut Brion’s home in Pessac is famous for its white wines; Haut Brion Blanc is the benchmark, a wine against which all others are mentioned and a rival to the great white of Montrachet in terms of quality, exclusivity, collectability and indeed price.
A Wine of Stunning Beauty
Located on the outskirts of Bordeaux city itself, Haut Brion sits on a fantastic terroir. Varied soils are of limestone, sandy gravels and deep clays. The location close to Bordeaux gives a little extra warmth. This means earlier picking than most and a touch more Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend.
Haut Brion’s style is one of genuine beauty. The varied terroirs here combine to result in a wine that combines the elegance of Lafite with the aromatic complexity of Margaux. Again, to quote Jane Anson, it “is often the benchmark for what can be achieved in any given vintage in Bordeaux.
The Legendary Chateau Haut Brion 1989
Any list of the best wines made in Bordeaux, or anywhere else for that matter, must include Chateau Haut Brion 1989. The product of an excellent Bordeaux vintage, it was an immense wine from barrel and fully lived up to its potential. 1989 Haut Brion has amassed 100-point scores from nearly every critic that has tasted it.
As 1989 Haut Brion, it ages and matures, it continues to impress. Neal Martin awarded it a perfect score in 2019, and Jane Anson did the same in 2021. William Kelley followed suit in 2022.

56% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc. Seen by some as similar to the legendary 1949, a very dry winter was followed by a wet April, before dry weather set in for the rest of the growing season. Quite different to the other first growths, with exotic notes combined with dark and red fruit, along with distinctly earthy, meaty characters. Plenty of opulence here, with a spice-laden palate, fine acidity and a hint of iodine on the finish. Nicely mature and in good balance, this still has a long way to go. (AWH)

The 2005 Haut-Brion is a deep, meaty wine. Black cherry, game, smoke, tobacco, licorice, gravel and scorched earth saturate every corner of the palate. The 2005 is inky, creamy and voluptuous right out of the gate. It is also very young and in need of time in bottle. Most wines I tasted for this report started to lose a little steam after 24 hours, but the Haut-Brion kept getting better and better. It s a magical wine, if a bit less accessible than most other 2005s at this stage. Tasted two times.

The mineral-laced 2005 Haut Brion (56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc) is exquisite. With its elegance and finesse, it is not as powerful as La Mission, but the nobility and complexity of the aromatics, incredible fragrance (subtle smoke and blue, red, and black fruits) that persists in the glass, full-bodied mouthfeel (though very light and delicate on its feet), and incredible length characterize this great Haut-Brion. It is just starting to drink well, and should continue to do so for at least another three decades. It is a tour de force in winemaking, but only 9,000 cases were produced.

Bright ruby-red. Wonderfully expressive nose combines black raspberry, mocha, hot stones, caramel and tobacco. Lush, fat and full but with terrific definition and suavity to its extravagantly dense black raspberry, stone and licorice flavors. As large-scaled as this is, it’s not at all overly sweet. Expands impressively on the back half, finishing with substantial tannins that are thoroughly covered by fruit. A great vintage for Haut-Brion.
