Petrus: Luxury, Exclusivity and Quality

Pomerol’s Petrus is one of the world’s great wines. A name that stands for all that is luxurious and exclusive, allocations are highly prized and back-vintages are absolute treasures. Its inclusion is the hallmark of a truly world-class cellar.

Made in limited amounts from a fabulous terroir, Petrus is an icon and a benchmark for both the Pomerol appellation and Bordeaux itself.

Petrus has a long history, but soared in the latter half of the 20th Century to its current position at the very top of the fine wine tree and perhaps the most famous of all fine wines.

What Makes Petrus So Special?

The reputation of Petrus is built on this peerless quality. Petrus is a wine known for its extraordinary richness, power, concentration, and complexity.

The vineyard of Petrus covers 11.4 hectares in Pomerol, and 100% Merlot. The soil is composed of a unique and ancient sticky blue clay that is only found here. This clay is excellent for water retention, allowing the vines to cope well with any summer heat. They also give the wine its distinctive power and opulence that is delivered in a measured and sophisticated style. The average age of the vines is 45 years, and some of them are over 100 years old. This adds extra concentration, complexity and nuance.

These vines yield just 2,500 cases in a typical vintage, and they could be sold many times over, such is the demand.

Jane Anson sums up the style of Petrus nicely. “It combines wonderful aromatic persistency with waves of flavour.” Importantly, however, “what Petrus has over many other great Bordeaux is this simple pleasure at the same time – a seductive texture that is, well, just so simply enjoyable”. It is this that has made Petrus so beloved.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 93

The 2014 Petrus has a slightly more extroverted bouquet compared directly with Lafleur. Crushed strawberry mixes with cranberry, orange rind and light cedar scents. With aeration, there are hints of dark chocolate and wild fennel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very cohesive and fresh. I feel that this Petrus has tightened up in recent months, which is a positive feature, as I was concerned that it might be advancing too quickly. As such, the finish has more brightness, tension and backbone. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting. [Neal Martin, 19/03/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2050

vinum 92

Closed on nose. Lots of volume on the palate – broadens to fill the mouth. Tannins are quite sleek and crunchy. Fruit is more red than black. Just missing excitement and complexity. [Matthew Hemming, 01/02/2024]

Wine Advocate 93

The 2014 Petrus was tasted on the same morning as the 2014 Vieux-Chateau-Certan and though they are built from different blends, their personalities are quite similar. This is a succinct, not powerful, much more refined and discrete bouquet, gradually unfurling and revealing a subtle sea spray/marine element. The palate is again quite discrete at first and unfolds at a glacial pace. It is beautifully balanced with fine tannin, quite linear and structured, gently building towards a finish that has wonderful salinity (continuing that marine theme). Note: I actually returned to taste this several hours later, because it was so closed earlier on and it did finally open, which is atypical for this Pomerol. It is a wonderful Petrus, but one that will deserve bottle age and decanting. [Neal Martin, 28/09/2017]

Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035

Antonio Galloni 93-96

The 2014 Petrus possesses remarkable density and power, with superb overall depth and an explosive sense of energy that is impossible to miss. Scents of violet, spice and rose petal open up in the glass before the fruit totally takes over. Broad and resonant throughout, Petrus is one of the bigger, richer wines readers will come across in 2014. The harvest at Petrus took place between September 23 and October 4. Winemaker Olivier Berrouet gave the 2014 15 days on the skins, opting for what he describes as very gentle extractions. New oak is 50%. [Antonio Galloni, 04/01/2015]
