Coming Soon: The 100 Point 2019 Chateau Latour
Tuesday 17th March sees one of the big fine wine releases of the year, a new vintage of Chateau Latour.
Made all the more exciting as it’s from a fantastic Bordeaux vintage and is armed with 100-point scores, this 2019 Chateau Latour is set to follow last year’s 2016 and be an instant sell-out. Also being released is a superb vintage of the Forts de Latour, the 2020.
2019 was an excellent vintage for Bordeaux and was responsible for wines of grace, charm and real sophistication. As one of the finest winemaking properties on the planet, Latour was well placed to take advantage and crafted a monumental Grand Vin that was among the elite wines of the year.
Two 100-Point Scores
Scores and notes from critics are below and show this 2019 to be a very strong vintage for Latour.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown and Jeb Dunnuck both award it a perfect 100 points, with the former calling it “exquisitely constructed with a myriad of very fine layers, supported by ripe, grainy tannins and beautiful tension” and the latter, “another perfect wine in the vintage and is as prodigious as they come.”
William Kelley gives it a massive 99+ points and calls it “a profound wine in the making”.

2019 Chateau Latour

Composed of 92.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7.5% Merlot, the 2019 Latour is deep garnet-purple in color. It comes barreling out of the glass with powerful notes of blackcurrant jelly, blackberry pie, and plum preserves, followed by suggestions of pencil shavings, cast-iron pan, and charcoal. The medium to full-bodied palate is exquisitely constructed with a myriad of very fine layers, supported by ripe, grainy tannins and beautiful tension, finishing epically long and mineral-laced. Looking at the Grand Vin, the 2019 Château Latour is another perfect wine in the vintage and is as prodigious as they come. Revealing a deep purple hue, it displays a powerful and complex array of pure Pauillac cassis-like fruit as well as lead pencil, graphite, chalky minerality, truffle, and espresso and shows the vintage’s more elegant style perfectly, with nothing out of place. It is medium to full-bodied, with ripe, sweet tannins, but it still has that classic Latour regalness, concentration, structure, and class, with just a hint of its normal youthful austerity. This flawless balanced, structured, insanely good Latour will be drinkable in just 7-8 years but evolve for 40-50 years in cold cellars. The 2019 Latour is a profound wine in the making, and it will surely emerge as one of the most long-lived wines of the vintage, as well as one of the greatest. Unwinding in the glass with scents of rich cassis fruit, English walnuts, cigar wrapper, black truffle, loamy soil and violets, it’s full-bodied, layered and muscular, with huge depth at the core, ripe tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, seemingly interminable finish. Checking in at 14.1% alcohol, this prodigious Latour will require two decades to hit its stride, but it will be more than worth the wait. (2022)
2020 Forts de Latour

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26.5% Merlot, and 3.5% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Les Forts de Latour is deep garnet-purple colored. The nose is very closed to begin, slowly offering glimpses at crushed blackberries, mulberries, and cassis notes, followed by hints of aniseed, black truffles, and underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is very tightly wound with loads of vibrant black fruit and earthy layers and a firm, grainy backbone, finishing long with a compelling lift.
